I MEET JENNIFER IN THE GULFHAUS VECHTA WITH HER SMALL BLACK DOG “WHISKY” WITH WHOM SHE WAS JUST PLAYING AROUND IN THE MEADOW IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. AFTER I’VE GREETED BOTH, I START WITH MY INTERVIEW WHILE THE DOG CURIOUSLY SCURRIES BETWEEN MY LEGS.

JENNIFER, YOU’RE PLAYING TONIGHT IN VECHTA. DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE TOWN?

No, not really. I don’t even know if we’re in the north or the south. We’re on the road so much, you lose sight of it.

SO VECHTA LIES A LITTLE SOUTH OF BREMEN AND IS KNOWN AS “RIDER TOWN.” DO YOU HAVE ANY SUDDEN ASSOCIATIONS TO IT?

That’s right, we were in Bremen yesterday…

I don’t have any associations to horseback-riding, but I like eating horse sausage! You can write it like that if you want. smiles

YOU’RE REALLY ON THE ROAD A LOT RIGHT NOW. YOU’RE STILL GOING TO BE TOURING INTO OCTOBER AND HAVE PERFORMANCES NEARLY EVERY DAY.

Actually until November. We already have 50 shows behind us and there’ll be another 100. It’s obviously stressful.

AND THIS IS JUST YOUR FIRST TOUR. YOU PROBABLY COULDN’T HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD THAT WOULD BE.

It’s our first tour with Jennifer Rostock, but we had other bands in the past. But that’s true, we haven’t had any tour this long yet. It was planned that way from the start, though, and we didn’t expect to have such a response so quickly.

THE PERFORMANCE ON STEFAN RAAB’S “BUNDESVISION SONG CONTEST” WAS ALSO VITAL FOR THAT?

Yeah, definitely! We didn’t expect to reach fifth place and from then on, it’s really full at the concerts. Which is awesome, of course.

DID YOU HAVE ANY IMPRESSIONS DURING THE PERFORMANCE THAT THE AUDIENCE’S REACTION WAS SO POSITIVE?

No, you don’t really realize much during such a gig. You concentrate, then have to go out and after what feels like seconds, the song’s over and you have to leave the stage again. Otherwise, every band obviously has their own group of fans that’ll mostly cheer for “their” band. We celebrated before and after the performance with them and we also got presents. But from the outside, we didn’t catch much. It’s a little hard to guess how the view on us is, from inside the band. You’re kind of in a bubble.

AMONG OTHERS, YOU’RE ALSO PLAYING A CAMPAIGN WEEK AGAINST THE RIGHT AND IN FAVOR OF HELPING FIGHT CANCER. ARE THERE OTHER PROJECTS THAT YOU ENGAGE YOURSELVES FOR?

Of course we do, but there’s nothing special or anything political planned. Performances against the right are clearly important, but otherwise, we’re not a political band – even our lyrics aren’t political – and because of that, we stay out of that area completely.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU BELONG TO ONE SPECIFIC SCENE OR DO YOU HAVE SPECIAL CONTACT TO ONE SCENE? FOR EXAMPLE, PUNK?

No, actually. We say that what we do musically is more New East German Wave Punk.

YOU’RE ALSO PERFORMING WITH MIA, FOR ONE.

Yeah, that’s kind of the direction where you could place us the easiest. You could most likely compare us to bands like MIA, WIR SIND HELDEN, or IDEAL.

THROUGH SINGING IN GERMAN, YOU DEFINITELY HAVE A MAIN AUDIENCE. IS THERE ANYWHERE YOU’D WANT TO PERFORM INTERNATIONALLY, DESPITE THAT?

That’s true, that we have our audience here because of that, but there’s actually also a lot of requests from France, for instance.

…WHERE GERMAN MUSIC IS OBVIOUSLY VERY POPULAR RIGHT NOW. LIKE WITH TOKIO HOTEL, FOR EXAMPLE.

I think German music was already popular in France aside from that. And we wouldn’t compare ourselves to Tokio Hotel, anyway. Generally, it’s better that German music is popular there, even for other bands like Silbermond, etc., but I don’t think it’s due to the musical style. The interest was pretty much already there.

IN WHAT WAY TO YOU WRITE YOUR SONGS? IS IT JUST THAT THE LYRICS ARE THERE FIRST OR IS IT THE MUSIC?

Interesting, that’s asked so often. Usually Joe and I write the songs. One of us has an idea and then we sit down together. In any case, the others in the band could obviously bring something along and it’s all be adjusted, but the songs are mostly from Joe and me.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE PEOPLE “OUT THERE”? OR SOMETHING YOU’RE HOPING FOR?

Hm. Well, there are always people who say we’re just a casting band and I’ve also heard people – even here – say that they think Jennifer Rostock is shit, from a girl, at that. I’ll probably give her my thoughts tonight at the show smiles And apart from that, I absolutely want the right mood to be there today. We’re here in the north and you already notice a difference…in the south, it always starts off right. If it all works out and it’s full, then we’ll rock the house damn well!

AFTER THE GOODBYES AND AFTER WHISKY SNIFFS AT MY LEG ONCE MORE, JENNIFER GOES OUTSIDE TO THE FIELD WITH HIM AGAIN.
